A PET STORY
I’m a sucker for any kind of pet story. I read about this one many years ago; there may be other versions of this tale out there but this is the one that I know of. Although I don’t remember all of the details, I do remember its essence.
A certain man and his dog shared a very special relationship. He had rescued him as a puppy in war torn Europe. They had a close, loving bond that rivaled none and by all accounts had a rich, full life together. This dog became the stuff that legends are made of!
One evening they were walking along the beach playing fetch with a stick. The dog was well on in years now. They were having fun in the cool of the day and all was well with the world. The man playfully through the stick once again, but the dog did not jump or run to catch it this time. Instead, he stood still for a moment and looked intensely back at the man. The man couldn’t understand the strange look in the dog’s eyes; he wore an expression that the man had never seen before. Suddenly, the dog bounded toward him and leapt in the air. The man quickly reached out and when he caught the dog in his arms – he was already dead.
This dog had been a major star in the silent movies and on radio, having his own star on the ‘Hollywood Walk of Fame’. He was succeeded by his descendents in a television series in the 1950’s.
The man was Lee Duncan and the dog was Rin Tin Tin.
